The 2020 Democratic presidential primaries involved the largest and most diverse slate of candidates in modern era party nominee selection, a diversity that allowed some to reject neoliberal discourses endemic American politics. In this essay, we analyze primary debates demonstrate emergence an alternative political economy stands opposition standard economic orthodoxy. Candidates organized their critiques extant around corruption, presenting it as rot at heart present capitalist order, with Donald Trump more symptom than cause America’s unjust deeply flawed system. That compelled “economic patriotism” which posited obligation collective above profit. essay concludes by unpacking implications break from orthodoxy campaign debate context.
